Humane Society of the United States
 PETLAND MESSAGES

 TOP MESSAGES:

• An HSUS investigation recently revealed that the Petland chain of stores is the nation’s
largest retail supporter of puppy mills.

• The HSUS asks Petland to stop selling puppies in favor of selling pet supplies only. We
encourage Petland to do as other forward-thinking pet stores currently do by hosting local
rescue groups and shelters so that homeless animals are adopted in communities across the
  nation.

• Most pet stores that sell puppies are propping up puppy mills, and HSUS investigations
have shown again and again that most pet stores mislead customers about the sources of
  their dogs.

• Puppy mills thrive because people buy the puppies. The dog-loving, puppy-buying public
has it in its power to stop puppy mills for good simply by making sure they never buy a
  puppy mill puppy.

• Dogs of all shapes and sizes (including purebreds) are available at shelters and rescue
  groups for adoption.

 SECONDARY MESSAGES:

• The greatest victims of puppy mills are the breeding parents. Mother and father dogs spend
their lifetimes locked in cages, churning out puppies for the pet trade.

• Puppy mills sell their puppies through pet stores, fancy internet sites and even newspaper
  classified ads.

• Puppy buyers MUST go and visit the home where their puppy was born and see how the
parents are treated before handing over any money.

• People can help by pledging not to shop at stores that sell puppies. Visit The HSUS’s Stop
  Puppy Mills campaign website at
www.humanesociety.org/puppymills.

Question & Answer Section:

Q.
Does this Petland sell puppy mill dogs?

A.
The HSUS investigation showed that Petland stores have been found again and again to
be selling puppies from puppy mills. With the Petland chain of stores linked to puppy
mills and so many pets in shelters already homeless, we think the entire Petland chain of
stores should stop selling puppies and encourage adoptions instead.

OR

If brokers like The Hunte Corporation or Lambriar are on the dogs’ paperwork, it is an
indication that the store is buying from middlemen—brokers that The HSUS has linked to
   puppy mills.
The store cannot ensure its customers that they do not do business with
puppy mills if they are dealing with brokers
.

Q.
How do you know that Petland supports puppy mills?

A.
The HSUS investigated the sources of puppies sold to 76 different Petland stores. Every
store that The HSUS investigated was tied to puppy mills and puppy brokers (middlemen
    who sell to pet stores).

Q.
How long was your investigation into Petland?

A.
The investigation took place over 8 months and traced the sources of 17,000 puppies sold

 to Petland stores.

Q.
Where can I find more information about the investigation?

A.
Our website www.humanesociety.org/puppymills.
